I had the distinct honor of working closely with him during his time as Ukraine’s Ambassador to Ankara. His unwavering support for the educational and cultural projects I was involved in truly made a difference. A true friend of Türkiye, Mr. Sybiha has always been a key figure in strengthening the bonds between our two nations.

Especially during this crucial time, his leadership and deep understanding of diplomacy will be vital in navigating the challenges ahead and fostering even stronger ties between Ukraine and its partners.

🎉 Proud moment at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Management, Istanbul Technical University! Today, Yunus Emre Gürler, my PhD advisee and Senior Business Analyst at Enerji Piyasaları İşletme Anonim Şirketi (EPİAŞ), successfully defended his dissertation titled “Optimal Design of the Turkish Natural Gas Market.”

In his compelling research, Yunus Emre explored the intricate dynamics of the Turkish natural gas market, focusing on how different unbundling strategies—ownership and legal—impact the market’s efficiency, competition, and consumer welfare. Utilizing a robust theoretical framework based on industrial organization and game theory, his work meticulously models the strategic interactions between a state-owned incumbent and private firms, addressing scenarios that affect the market’s equilibrium and policy implications. The thesis is notable for its depth and practical relevance, applying analytical techniques to provide actionable insights and recommendations for policymakers and market participants.

I had the privilege of guiding such an insightful scholar as his advisor, alongside an esteemed jury comprising Prof. Resul Aydemir, Prof. Matthias Finger, Prof. Muzaffer Eroğlu, Prof. Mübariz Hasanov, and myself. Yunus Emre’s work stands as a testament to the rigorous academic environment at our university and the practical impact our research can have on critical sectors.

Babamız Hacı Mehmet Zeki Ertemel’i ebediyete uğurlamanın derin hüznü içindeyiz. 1940 yılında Siirt’te dünyaya gelen ve sekiz kardeşin en küçüğü olarak sevgi ve şefkatle büyüyen babamız, hayatı boyunca da tüm insanlara sevgi ve şefkatle yaklaşıp, bütün insanların sevgi ve saygısını kazanmıştır. Siirt Atatürk İlkokulu’nda uzun yıllar öğretmenlik yaparak sayısız öğrenci yetiştirmiş, emekliliğinin ardından amcalarımla birlikte ticarete atılmıştır. İster öğretmenlik yaptığı dönemde, isterse sonrasında olsun, daima örnek alınacak bir hayat yaşamıştır. Güler yüzüyle tanınan, kısa süreli sohbetlerde bile insanların hafızasına pozitif enerjisi, sevgisi ve neşesiyle kazınan babamız, bulunduğu her ortamda ilgi odağı olmayı başarmış ve bu ilgiye de hep layık olmuştur. Onun evlatlarına, akrabalarına, komşularına, arkadaşlarına ve çevresindeki bütün insanlara yaptıklarını anlatmaya kelimeler kifayetsiz kalır. Nikah şahidi olduğu kişilerin, barıştırdığı insanların sayısını hatırlamıyorum. Babamız Fatih’e gittiğinde ihtiyaç sahipleri, Merter’e evine döndüğünde de çocuklar etrafını sarardı ve hiçbir zaman hiç kimseyi geri çevirmezdi. Her zaman aklında ve kalbinde namaz ve duayı taşıyan babamız, yoğun bakımdan çıktıktan sonra bile ilk olarak namaz vaktini sormuş, acılarına rağmen her doktoru ve hemşireyi gülümseyerek karşılamış ve dualarla uğurlamıştır. Onun evlatları olarak duyduğumuz gurur tarifsizdir. Hakkı inşallah hiç kimseye geçmemiş olan babamızın bizden yana da hakkı helal olsun. Allah’tan rahmet, mağfiret ve firdevs cennetinde peygamberimize komşu olmasını niyaz ediyoruz. İnşallah Rabbim bizi ahirette birbirimize kavuştursun. Âmin.

🌟 Celebrating the Accomplishment of Burak Doğan @dn_brk! 🎓

I am delighted to share that my student, Burak Doğan, has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled "A Fair Division Approach to Understanding Distribution Principles in Islamic Law of Inheritance" at the Department of Economics, Istanbul Technical University.

Burak's research journey has been truly remarkable. His thesis focused on analyzing cases from Islamic law history, assessing historical resolutions proposed by scholars, and applying classic fair division rules to these cases, providing alternative solutions. Using a game-theoretical approach, Burak systematically explored the unique principles underpinning Islamic distributions.

This research not only addresses knowledge gaps but also emphasizes the relevance of cooperative game theory in dissecting Islamic legal disputes. It bridges the gap between game theory and Islamic law, offering a nuanced understanding of legal disputes in Islamic jurisprudence.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished members of the jury who played a pivotal role in Burak Doğan's successful Ph.D. thesis:
